If you’ve ever uploaded a photo to Facebook, only to find out that it doesn’t display the entire picture, you’re not alone. Nothing can be worse than uploading a photo that has important information, only for that information to be cut off because the image is not the right size.

That’s exactly why everyone that uploads anything onto Facebook, especially marketers and social media managers, need to understand and know the dimensions of each picture. As one of the largest social media platforms today, Facebook can make marketers’ lives difficult by using a vast array of different image dimensions.

What can be more frustrating is that Facebook dimensions are different from the image dimensions used on other social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube.

That’s why it’s incredibly important to be fully informed on the proper Facebook image size. In this guide, we’ll reveal to you all of the important Facebook post image size. The goal is to help you prevent a future scenario where your fire Facebook post is not displaying properly.

Facebook Profile Picture Size

Other than using an image for a Facebook post, the next most common image to be uploaded to Facebook is your profile picture. Your Facebook profile picture size is important to know because it will help you let others know who you are and is really the first thing users will notice about you or your brand.

Acceptable: 180 x 180 (pixels)

Recommended: 2048 x 2048

facebook dimensions

While you can go as low as 180 x 180, we recommend that you bump it up to 2048 x 2048 because your image will definitely come across more clean and crisp than a smaller image that might look pixelated and even, blurry. The important thing to remember about your Facebook profile picture size is that the ratio will always be 1 to 1, meaning whatever width you assign your image, just know that the height should be the same figure.

Facebook Cover Photo Size (Personal and Brand)

When it comes to the Facebook cover photo size, there are two things you absolutely need to remember: the cover photo dimensions are slightly different for personal and brand pages.

If you are the social media manager of a brand, open up two tabs for Facebook, one for your personal profile page and the other for the brand page you’re managing. Do you see the difference? It’s very minor but you can see that for your personal page, the cover photo is directly behind your Facebook profile photo. Now take a look at your brand page. You can clearly see that the profile and cover images are separate, as the cover photo is directly to the right of the profile photo.

As we briefly touched on, the dimensions for both cover photos are slightly different so it’s important to pay attention to the details here.

Facebook Cover Photo Size (PERSONAL)

Acceptable: 851 x 315 (width x height)

Recommended: 2037 x 754

Facebook Cover Photo Size (BRAND)

Acceptable: 820 x 312

Recommended: 1958 x 745

Uniclix features the important pieces in this cover photo, the tagline and website, and it’s what you would expect from one of the best social media planning platforms out there.

Facebook Cover Photo Size (Group)

Now you may be thinking what’s the difference between this cover photo and the previous two we just reviewed? That’s a good question and one that deserves its own section for a number of reasons.

One, and you probably have already guessed this, but the dimensions are also different! Another reason we wanted to give this its own section is that we want to illustrate to you what happens when you don’t follow the dimensions! Lastly, while there are a growing number of Facebook groups, by and large, these groups don’t pale in comparison to the number of company pages out there.

Facebook groups are pages about different topics that people can either join or ask to join. It’s a great place to engage with other people about certain topics. Here is the Facebook Group cover photo size.

Acceptable: 820 x 332

Recommended: 1958 x 793

Now take a look at this cover photo of a Facebook group called Penny Stocks Group.

DAY TRADING PENNY STOCKS - facebook dimensions

While nothing may jump out at you to say that something is wrong, upon further review, we can see that the quality is severely lacking. This is obviously not a high-resolution photo and, in fact, it’s the exact opposite.

What likely happened here is that the administrator of this group created this cover photo using much smaller dimensions than the acceptable 820 x 332 dimensions. When he or she went to upload it to this group’s page, it had to scale the image up to meet the required 820 x 332 dimensions. The end result is an image that is blurry and really lacking any quality.

We cannot stress enough that it’s vital to pay attention to the dimensions of the images you’re uploading to Facebook. Take the time to find the correct dimensions and use that as a guide to creating your artwork.
